The Borough Market has been around a long time. You can find historical references that go back a thousand years.  In 1755 it was closed by Parliament for causing congestion, but soon reopened.  While the market has gone through huge changes in it’s time, it is still located on its original site where it all started by selling produce, grain, fish and livestock a millennium ago.  It claims to be London’s oldest and most renowned market.

If you love public markets, like we do, then this one has to be on your bucket list!  Steeped in historic significance, it’s also a food lovers dream.  While there are usually throngs of tourists here, this is also where the locals do their shopping and a top destination for London’s chefs in search of premium ingredients.  What a pleasure to stroll around taking in the abundance of items offered here.  There are countless vendors offering spices and preserves, seafood, meat, produce, dairy, baked goods, drinks, charcuterie and so on… but there is also a vast array of cafes, bars and restaurants.  This is a great market to be introduced to some new foods, as there are a lot of hard to find and specialty items on hand. But you can also just do your grocery shopping here, or come in to sit down for a meal.  This market is really dazzling in its wealth of wonderful things being offered, so give yourself plenty of time to soak it all in.

Be prepared for crowds, especially on Saturday.  If you feel claustrophobic in crowds, it would be best to come early or avoid the weekend.  On the flip side, it is an especially fun spot for people watching while walking about shamelessly eating samples for a couple of hours!   Bring cash as many vendors don’t accept credit cards.

Travel Tips

The market is located next to London Bridge station on the south side of the Thames, which is serviced by the Jubilee and Northern Lines on the underground and by overground trains from all over London and the Sough of England. It’s an easy walk from many of London’s most popular attractions.
